The problem
The home already had ducted air conditioning, and the owner wanted the system replaced. With seven outlets through the house, the new system also needed to let different areas be run separately.
What we found
The roof space had room to hang the new indoor unit from the roof framing. Outside, the side passage gave a position for the outdoor unit against the wall, out of the way of the main living areas.
How we completed the ducted system replacement
The new LG indoor unit was installed in the roof space and suspended from the roof framing. From there, ducting runs to the seven outlets through the home.
The system was set up with four zones. Zoning lets the owner heat or cool only the parts of the house in use, instead of running every outlet at once.
The new outdoor unit was placed at ground level in the side passage and connected to the indoor unit and the power supply.

The result
The home now has a new LG ducted system in place of the old one, with seven outlets and four zones. The indoor unit is out of sight in the roof space and the outdoor unit sits in the side passage.
What this Avalon Beach job shows
Replacing a ducted system is a good time to look at how the home is zoned. Four zones across seven outlets give the owner control over which areas run and when.
The right number of zones depends on the layout of the home and how each area is used. That is worked out at the site assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Can an existing ducted system be replaced with a different brand?
Yes. A replacement does not have to be the same brand as the old system. The new indoor and outdoor units are installed as a matched pair, and an installer checks what else needs to change to suit them.
How many zones should a ducted system have?
It depends on the layout of the home and how each area is used. Many homes separate living areas from bedrooms. This home has four zones across seven outlets.
Can zones be added when a ducted system is replaced?
Often, yes. A replacement is a practical time to review the zoning, because the system is already being worked on. What is possible depends on the ductwork and the new system.
Where does the indoor unit of a ducted system go?
In most homes, it is installed in the roof space, with ducting running to outlets in the ceiling. On this job, the indoor unit was hung from the roof framing.
