The problem

The home needed heating and cooling in every part of the house, with 12 outlets in total. Running that many outlets from a single unit means long duct runs and one system doing all the work.

What we found

Splitting the home across two ducted systems was the better fit. A 10kW system was chosen for five outlets and a 12.5kW system for the other seven.

The roof space had room for both indoor units. Outside, there was space for one outdoor unit in the side passage and one under the covered patio.

How we completed the ducted installation

Both indoor units were installed in the roof space and suspended from the roof framing. Ducting was run from each unit to its outlets.

Each system was set up with two zones, giving the home four zones in total. Zoning lets the owner run air conditioning only in the parts of the house being used.

The outdoor units were placed at ground level against the brick wall. One sits in the side passage and the other under the covered patio, with the pipework run in capping along the wall.

The result

The home now has two Daikin premium ducted systems covering 12 outlets across four zones. Each system runs on its own, so one part of the house can be heated or cooled without running the other.

What this St Andrews job shows

One ducted system is not always the right answer for a larger home. Two systems can keep duct runs shorter and let each part of the house run separately.

Whether a home suits one system or two depends on its size and layout, the number of outlets and how the household uses each area. That is worked out at the site assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can a house have two ducted air conditioning systems?

Yes. Larger homes can be fitted with two separate ducted systems, each with its own indoor and outdoor unit. Each system then looks after its own part of the house.

When does a home need two ducted systems instead of one?

It depends on the size and layout of the home, the number of outlets needed and the roof space available. Two systems can suit homes with many outlets, two storeys or separate living and sleeping areas. An installer should assess the home before recommending either option.

What are zones in a ducted system?

Zones let you turn air conditioning on or off in different parts of the home. In this home, each system has two zones, so there are four areas that can be controlled separately.

How many outlets can a ducted system run?

It depends on the capacity of the system and the size of the rooms. On this job, the 10kW system runs five outlets and the 12.5kW system runs seven.
